The short version. GuardianLive is a personal safety app. To keep you safe, it handles some of the most sensitive data there is — your precise location, live and recorded video and audio, your emergency contacts, and your security PINs. We only collect what we need to operate the safety features you ask for, we share it primarily with the contacts you choose, and we never sell it. This page explains the details.

1. Who We Are

This Privacy Policy describes how GuardianLive LLC ("GuardianLive," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the GuardianLive mobile app, the GuardianLive Apple Watch companion app, and this website (together, the "Services").

If you have any questions, you can reach us at .

2. Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information, almost all of which you provide directly or generate by using the safety features of the app.

Account & profile information

  • Identity details: your name, email address, phone number, and username.
  • Profile picture: any photo you choose to upload.
  • Authentication credentials: your login credentials, managed through our authentication provider. If you sign up with Apple or Google (OAuth), we receive basic profile information from that provider.
  • Safety PINs: you create two 4-digit PINs during setup — a standard safety PIN and a separate emergency (duress) PIN. These are required to use the app and are stored in a protected, non-reversible form. They gate critical actions such as marking yourself safe, removing contacts, deleting history, and signing out.

Location information

  • Precise, real-time location: when you start a timer or stream, GuardianLive tracks your device location (including in the background) for the duration of that safety session, and records the path you travel.
  • Location path history: the route recorded during a session, including the state you were in at each point (e.g. "active" vs. "at risk"), is stored as part of that session's history entry.
  • Offline location archive: if your device loses connectivity during a session, location data is stored locally on your device and uploaded when connectivity returns, so the recorded path is complete.
  • Emergency location snapshots: on a cellular Apple Watch, fallback location snapshots may be captured and uploaded during an active safety session using a short-lived, session-scoped credential.

Video & audio (streaming)

  • Live video and audio: if you turn a timer into a stream ("Go Live"), your device records and live-streams audio and video to the cloud, where it can be viewed in real time by the contacts you selected for that session.
  • Recorded streams (VOD): when a streamed session ends, the recording is stored in the cloud and attached to that session's history entry.
  • Offline stream archive: like location, stream data is buffered on your device during connectivity loss and uploaded later so the recording is complete.
  • Chat messages: messages sent by viewers watching an active or at-risk stream.

Contacts

  • Your emergency contacts: the GuardianLive users you connect with, your contact requests (sent and received), and which contacts you select to be notified for each timer.
  • Shared safety data: when you are a contact for someone else, you can view their shared timer details, location path, and stream as described in this policy.

Timer & safety session data

  • Timer details: name, description, response instructions, duration, selected contacts, and options (such as "Don't require PIN," "Hidden until expiry," and "Disable reminders").
  • Session state & timestamps: the state of each session (active, at risk, duress, safe) and the started, expired, and ended times.
  • Duress data: when an emergency PIN is entered, we record and share the resulting duress session with your contacts as designed, including a location snapshot at the moment of the trigger.
  • History: completed sessions are stored in your history with all of the above details.

Device & technical information

  • Push notification tokens: a device identifier used to deliver alerts (e.g. when a timer is about to expire, a timer expires, a contact goes live, or a contact triggers their emergency PIN).
  • Device & app data: basic technical details needed to operate and secure the Services, such as device/OS type and app version.

Sensitive by design. Precise location and audio/video recordings are highly sensitive. GuardianLive only collects them while a safety session is active, and primarily to share them with the contacts you have chosen.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Provide the core safety features — run timers, track and record your location, stream live audio/video, and store session history.
  • Alert and inform your contacts — notify the contacts you selected when a timer is about to expire, expires, goes live, or enters the at-risk or duress state, and give them the data they need to help you.
  • Operate the duress / Emergency PIN system — including making certain actions appear to succeed while quietly alerting your contacts, exactly as described in the app.
  • Send notifications related to timers, contacts, and contact requests.
  • Authenticate you and secure your account, including enforcing PIN protection on critical actions.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the Services.
  • Comply with the law and enforce our terms.

4. How Your Information Is Shared

With the contacts you choose

This is the heart of GuardianLive. When you start a timer or stream, the contacts you select can see the relevant session information — timer details, your current and last-known location, your recorded path, and (for streams) live or recorded video and audio. Specifically:

  • Visibility follows your settings. If you use "Hidden until expiry," your contacts won't see that session unless it enters the at-risk or duress state — at which point it becomes visible retroactively with all data from the start, because that data is critical to getting you help.
  • Duress sharing. Entering your emergency PIN shares the duress session (and a location snapshot) with the contacts on that session.
  • Sign-out under duress. When the emergency PIN is used to sign out, your last-known location is sent to your contacts before you are signed out.

With service providers

We use trusted third parties to run the Services. They process data on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes. These include providers for:

  • Authentication, database, and backend hosting (where your account, timer, contact, and location data are stored).
  • Cloud storage for media such as recorded streams and profile pictures.
  • Live video streaming infrastructure.
  • Push notification delivery (e.g. Apple Push Notification service).
  • OAuth sign-in providers (Apple, Google), if you choose them.

For legal and safety reasons

We may disclose information if required by law, to respond to lawful requests, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of you, our users, or the public.

What we don't do

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.

5. Data Retention & Deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Services. Session history (including location paths and recorded streams) is retained so you and your selected contacts can access it, until you delete it or delete your account.

  • You control your data. You can delete individual history entries and remove contacts in the app.
  • Account deletion. You can delete your account at any time, which removes your associated data from our database and cloud storage. If a deletion is requested while a session is active, the session is torn down and deletion proceeds immediately. See our Account Deletion page for full instructions.
  • Residual copies. Some data may persist briefly in backups, and limited anonymized or aggregate data may be retained where required for legal or security purposes.

6. Security

We take the sensitivity of this data seriously and use technical and organizational measures to protect it, including:

  • PIN-gated critical actions so that someone who has your unlocked phone still can't end a session, remove contacts, or sign you out without your PIN.
  • The Emergency (duress) PIN, which lets you appear to comply under threat while silently alerting your contacts.
  • Encryption in transit for data moving between your device, our providers, and your contacts.
  • Scoped credentials for companion devices like the Apple Watch, which never store a long-lived session and cannot create timers, end sessions, change contacts, or bypass PIN/duress rules.
  • Token revocation on sign-out.

No method of transmission or storage is ever 100% secure, but we work to protect your information and to limit access to it.

7. Your Choices & Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal information, or to object to or restrict certain processing. You can exercise many of these directly in the app, and others by emailing us at . You can also:

  • Update your profile — you can change your name; your email and phone number are fixed to your account and can't be changed.
  • Change your PINs at any time in settings (this requires your password).
  • Manage permissions — location, camera, microphone, and notifications are controlled in your device settings. Disabling these will limit or disable core safety features.
  • Delete your account and associated data (see Section 5).

Each email address and phone number can be associated with only one GuardianLive account.

8. Children's Privacy

GuardianLive is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the minimum age required in their jurisdiction. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us so we can remove it.

9. International Users

GuardianLive is operated from the United States, and our service providers may process and store data in the United States and other countries. By using the Services, you understand your information may be transferred to and processed in countries with different data protection laws than your own.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Your continued use of the Services after an update means you accept the revised policy.

11. Contact Us
